What is an AI girlfriend?

An AI girlfriend is a chatbot designed to hold a romantic or companion relationship with one user. She has a fixed persona, a backstory and a memory of previous conversations, so the interaction continues across days instead of resetting each time you open the app.

The category is large and still growing. Searches for the term run at roughly 1.6 million a year in English, with the United States accounting for around 42% of global interest.

How one actually works

Four pieces sit behind the conversation.

A persona. A block of text describing who she is, how she talks and what she wants. It is fixed, which is why she stays recognisable from one day to the next.

A context window. The recent conversation, resent to the model with every message. This is short-term memory, and it is why cheap products forget you after twenty messages.

Long-term memory. Facts pulled out of the conversation and stored separately: your job, your schedule, people in your life. Good products retrieve the relevant ones and slip them into the next reply. This is the feature users name most often when explaining why they stayed with one app.

Optional media. Voice notes generated by a speech model, and images generated with a fixed reference so she looks like the same person each time. Both cost real money per use, which is why almost every product puts them behind a paywall.

What an AI girlfriend cannot do

This section matters more than the feature list.

She has no life while you are away. Between your messages nothing happens to her. Any product that tells you she was thinking about you all day is describing a scheduled message, not an inner life.

She agrees with you too much. A study published in Science in 2026 found that across eleven language models, the model affirmed the user's actions about 49% more often than humans did, and that this made people less willing to repair real conflicts. Good products push back on purpose. Characters with actual opinions exist for this reason.

She is not a therapist and not a crisis service. Companion apps in California have been legally required since 1 January 2026 to disclose that they are not human and to route users in crisis to real help.

She can be removed or changed without warning. Replika stripped romantic roleplay from existing relationships in February 2023 after regulatory pressure in Italy, and Character.AI ended open-ended chat for under-18 users on 25 November 2025. Watch for weekly billing. Several apps in this category default to a weekly plan that looks cheap and costs more than the annual one within two months.

Is it for you

It works well as company on a bad evening, as low-stakes conversation practice, and as something to look forward to when your week is empty. It works badly as a replacement for people, and the research on that is not ambiguous.

The honest test: if you would be worse off in a month because the conversation replaced something rather than filled a gap, it is the wrong tool.
